THE WORLD OF FRACTALS<\/strong><\/p>

Researching images and designs to generate and create new ideas for our jewellery range, I accidently discovered the wonderful world of fractals.\u00a0 I found that many of the beautiful and amazing images which attracted my <\/span>attention were in fact called Fractal Art\u00a0<\/span>and, at that time, I did not know anything about fractals.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span>Wanting\u00a0<\/span>to discover more, I tried to find a definition of a fractal and this became\u00a0<\/span>even more of a challenge since the world of fractals appears to be very complex\u00a0<\/span>and is implicit in many different disciplines.\u00a0<\/span>I discovered that:<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00b7\u00a0<\/span>Fractals can be\u00a0found in nature, science, technology, mathematics and art.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00b7 A<\/span>\u00a0fractal is a\u00a0never-ending pattern, which is repeated over and over again.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00b7\u00a0<\/span>Fractals are infinitely\u00a0complex patterns that are self-similar.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00b7\u00a0<\/span>Scientists use\u00a0fractals to measure and predict natural disasters.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00b7\u00a0<\/span>A fractal is a\u00a0mathematical formula that repeats over a wide range of size and time scales.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00b7\u00a0<\/span>Fractal Art has been described as a graphical representation of a mathematical equation.<\/span><\/p>

The\u00a0more information I obtained only added to the complexity of trying to\u00a0understand fractals but I will attempt to explain, albeit so<\/span>mewhat\u00a0simplistically, and please note that any errors are entirely mine!<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span>Remember\u00a0<\/span>when<\/span>\u00a0at school you had geometry classes\u00a0<\/span>and it had a lot to\u00a0<\/span>do <\/span>with specific\u00a0 sh<\/span>apes?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>These shapes c<\/span>oul<\/span>d be squares, rectangles, circles\u00a0<\/span>, ovals and so on; and\u00a0<\/span>included measurements which allowed you to calculate volume and areas.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Fractals are also a form of mathematics\u00a0<\/span>known as fractal geometry.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>This is quite\u00a0<\/span>different to the usually accepted geometry because the shapes associated with\u00a0<\/span>fractals do not fit within the usually accepted shapes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Now let’s have a look at fractals in nature, specifically noting the fact that it is extremely rare to find any straight lines in nature.\u00a0 As this is the natural world in which we all live, it means that our world and nature has very few traditional shapes and are primarily made up of fractals.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/p>

Imagine the s<\/span>hap<\/span>e and the intricacy of a fern frond <\/span>(a never-ending pattern which is repeated over and over again.)<\/i> Each branch is made up of smaller branches with even smaller leaves which appear as miniature reproductions of the main\u00a0<\/span>plant<\/span>. (infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar).\u00a0\u00a0 <\/i>Note that the frond does not conform to any traditional geometric shape.\u00a0 These are the clues which determine that the fern frond is, in fact, a fractal.\u00a0 Note also that the intricacy in design is incredibly beautiful and that this is only one small individual example which can extend to and probably beyond the structure of the universe!<\/span><\/p>

I started to specifically focus on fractal images as I wanted to use some of these fantastic images in our jewellery range.\u00a0 I usually purchase original images from authorised stockists or download images from the internet that are free to use commercially.\u00a0 These are usually images that have attracted my attention because of the intricate beauty in the design.\u00a0 Sometimes I use the original designs without too many changes, otherwise I can modify the original designs to distort, stretch, twist or mirror to re-create my own design concept.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span>So, without wanting to complicate things too much, perhaps the easiest way of demonstrating the use of fractal images in our new earring range, is to show a couple of images and the process:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
